When Did the Washington Commanders Get a New Mascot?
Washington’s new mascot was unveiled back in January 2023. To be specific, it was New Year’s Day at FedEx Field when Major Tuddy took to the field for the first time ever at halftime of Washington vs. Cleveland.
The Commanders lost the game 24-10. The result, combined with let’s just say mixed opinions about Major Tuddy, made for a tense afternoon in Washington.

Origin of the Washington Commanders Mascot Name
So, where did the name Major Tuddy come from? What connection does it have to this NFL franchise?
Firstly, “Major” relates to the area’s military community and the Commanders’ military brand. However, some have been critical of the use of the word “Major” – after all, Washington had to change its team name due to historical racial connotations.
But what about “Tuddy”? Well, a tuddy (also referred to as a TD) is the slang, informal term for a touchdown. And that’s exactly what Major Tuddy wants to see on the field at FedEx and on the road, right?!

What Does Major Tuddy Look Like?
Major Tuddy is a 6-foot-5, 230-pound “male hog with…a large belly, snout, and cloven hooves” according to his team. The Washington Commanders mascot was supposedly created “with kids in mind”. Not sure that many kids will take too kindly to a hog…
Anyway, why a hog? Well, Washington’s offensive line during the 1980s and part of the ’90s was nicknamed “the Hogs”. During this time, the franchise won an impressive three Super Bowls.
Some might ask why is the Washington Commanders mascot a pig? Well, now you can correct them and inform them it’s actually a hog.

What Does the Washington Commanders Mascot Wear?
Major Tuddy’s look actually derives from Washington’s uniform during their successful few years some 30 years ago.
He has “Commanders” on the front of his jersey. On the back, Tuddy has his name and #00 (in reference to a hog’s snout).
Finally, Major Tuddy’ wears a helmet inspired by those worn by active military members. He will alternate between wearing a burgundy hat and a silver hat.

Have You Seen the Washington Commanders Mascot Meme?
Which one, you ask? There have been so many memes made about Major Tuddy since his introduction. Everything from him being “stuff nightmares are made of” to “extremely creepy”.
